Do you know what CGI is? lt stands for computer-generated imagery, and describes 3D computer graphics used to create special effects in films, TV, and computer games. CGI replaces the time-consuming and expensive job of constructing miniatures or hiring extras for crowd scenes.

It's common knowledge that CGI was used in digital-era films such as the 2004 hit The Day After Tomorrow and 2007s Beowulf, but did you know that it was used much earlier in films such as Futureworld (1976)? Many of the first CGI films were commercial failures. So the directors wrote it off, until 1989, when CGI won over the motion picture industry with the film The Abyss, which produced complex CGI visual effects, most notably, a computer-generated sea creature.

In 1993, CGI revolutionized the film industry with Jurassic Park, in which the CGI created dinosaurs were seamlessly integrated into the live action scenes. Another milestone was Toy Story, released in 1995, which was the first fully computer-generated feature film and was a resounding success, grossing more than $300 million and delighting film buffs all over the world.
