Changing landscapes

The geography of the Earth has many features that are always changing. Natural disasters, weather, and human activity can all change the Earth's landscape.

A good example is the Sahara Desert. lt is the hottest place on earth with a record temperature of 136°F (57.8°C). lt is also the second largest desert in the world (9,000,000 sq km), but it used to be much bigger. At the end of the last ice age, the landscape changed when monsoon winds brought rain and plants and trees grew. However, the monsoons stopped and the desert began to dry out again. No one knows how climate change will affect the Sahara Desert in the future.

So far, the central desert of the Antarctic is unaffected by climate change, but parts of the coast are starting to melt. The largest Antarctic melting in the past 30 years was in 2005, when the temperature went up to 41°F (5°C) and a piece of ice the size of California briefly melted and then froze again. Melting ice makes sea levels around the world rise.
